A mate of mine’s son was diagnosed with an illness in 2007 and for some time I wanted to raise awareness of this cruel disease and hopefully raise some good money for the Tasmanian based charity. After being heavily involved with Football Administration I have always thought Tasmania deserved it’s own Legends Game to see some of the stars of the past and also an opportunity as Tasmanians to rub shoulders with these greats.
Believe it when I say the game started from a zero budget – that’s right no budget at all I called upon my network of businesses and contacts made over the journey and aimed to get this game of the ground. On Saturday 24th March 2012 – “Relive the Rivalry” was born and played at the traditional home of football in Tasmania – North Hobart Oval.
The Tasmanian team was made up of former VFL/AFL and past state-wide players against a Victorian/All-Stars (VAS) team made up of past VFL/AFL players from all-round Australia. Tasmanian was coached by respected past player and coach Andy Bennett and captained by Hawthorn Premiership Player Paul Hudson. Whilst the VAS team was led by former St. Kilda coach Stan Alves and captained by 5 day, 5 night Premiership Legend – Dermott Brereton.
